Marriage Counseling in Oklahoma
Heal the Pattern. Reconnect with Each Other.
Most couples don’t struggle because they don’t love each other.
They struggle because, somewhere along the way, they get caught in patterns that make it difficult to feel safe, understood, and connected.
One partner pursues while the other withdraws. One becomes critical while the other becomes defensive. Old hurts resurface. The same arguments happen again and again, even when both people genuinely want things to be different.
At Inner Space Counseling, I help couples slow down these painful cycles, understand what is happening beneath them, and rediscover the connection that brought them together in the first place.
My approach to marriage counseling is informed by Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO), a relationship therapy model based on Internal Family Systems (IFS).
What Is IFIO?
Intimacy from the Inside Out was developed specifically for working with couples and relationships using the principles of Internal Family Systems.
IFS recognizes that each of us has different “parts” of ourselves that developed to protect us. In relationships, these protective parts can become especially active.
For example, a part of you may become angry when you feel ignored. Another may shut down when conflict feels overwhelming. You might have a part that needs reassurance, a part that avoids vulnerability, or a part that quickly assumes the worst when your spouse seems distant.
Underneath these reactions are often deeper emotions and needs: fear of rejection, loneliness, shame, grief, longing, or the desire to know that you truly matter to the person you love.
IFIO helps couples move beyond arguing about the surface issue and begin understanding what is happening underneath the conflict.
You Are Not the Problem. The Pattern Is.
Couples often arrive in counseling believing they need to determine who is right and who is wrong.
IFIO takes a different approach.
Instead of asking, “Whose fault is this?” we become curious about the cycle that has developed between you.
Perhaps one spouse feels disconnected and begins pursuing harder. The other experiences that pursuit as criticism or pressure and withdraws. The withdrawal increases the first spouse’s fear of disconnection, so they pursue even more intensely.
Before long, both people are reacting from protective places rather than genuinely encountering one another.
Marriage counseling creates space to slow this cycle down.
As each spouse becomes more aware of what is happening internally, it becomes possible to respond with greater curiosity, compassion, courage, and clarity rather than automatically reacting from fear or defensiveness.
What We May Work On
Marriage counseling using an IFIO-informed approach can help couples work through:
Recurring arguments and communication problems
Emotional distance and disconnection
Difficulty expressing needs or emotions
Trust and relational wounds
Resentment and unresolved hurt
Sexual and emotional intimacy
Anxiety within the relationship
Shame and defensiveness
Conflict around pornography or compulsive behaviors
The impact of trauma or painful past experiences
Major life transitions
Spiritual or values-based concerns
Rebuilding friendship, affection, and connection
The goal is not simply to learn better communication techniques. Communication matters, but lasting change often requires understanding why certain interactions affect us so deeply in the first place.
From Protection to Connection
Behind many marital conflicts are two people trying to protect something vulnerable.
Anger may be protecting hurt.
Withdrawal may be protecting against overwhelm.
Criticism may be protecting a fear of not mattering.
Defensiveness may be protecting shame.
When couples can recognize these protective responses without attacking or judging them, something begins to change. Instead of seeing your spouse as the enemy, you can begin to see the deeper person behind the reaction.
That creates the possibility for a different kind of conversation:
Not simply, “How do we stop fighting?”
But, “What happens inside of us when we lose each other, and how can we find our way back?”
A Different Kind of Marriage Counseling
I believe healthy marriages require more than conflict-management strategies. They require the ability to remain present, curious, honest, and compassionate with one another, especially when vulnerable emotions emerge.
My role is not to take sides or determine which spouse is the problem.
Instead, I help both of you understand the internal and relational dynamics keeping you stuck and create a safer space for each person to be heard.
Over time, couples can learn to recognize their protective patterns earlier, speak from a more grounded place, listen without immediately becoming defensive, repair relational wounds, and experience greater emotional intimacy.
Marriage Counseling at Inner Space Counseling
If you feel like you and your spouse keep having the same argument, have grown emotionally distant, or simply want a deeper and healthier relationship, marriage counseling can provide a place to begin again.
You do not have to have a marriage in crisis to benefit from counseling. Some couples come because something is clearly broken. Others come because their marriage is good, but they know it could become deeper, more honest, and more connected.
Using an approach informed by IFS and Intimacy from the Inside Out, we can explore not only what is happening between you, but what is happening within each of you.
Because sometimes the path back to each other begins by understanding what is happening inside.
Ready to Begin?
If you and your spouse are ready to understand your patterns, heal old wounds, and build a deeper connection, I would be honored to walk with you.
